Wootton Community Network

The Wootton Community Network (WCN) is a non-profit volunteer-run organisation. As the Wootton Community Reserve Trust Manager, it manages the Wootton Community Centre and the associated crown lands. The crown lands reserve consists of the School Hall and Toilet Block, The Brush Turkey Cafe, the former school master’s house, the tennis courts, and tennis shed and surrounding lands.

HISTORY

Established in March 1999, after a series of public meetings, the Wootton Community Network was formed to encourage community spirit, sustainable development, and local employment.

AIMS

  • to see the local area prosper once more, with improvements to existing services and the
creation of employment opportunities in an environment of community, not isolation.
  • to enhance the lives of people living within the local community.
  • to serve as an example to other small isolated communities.
  • to develop a sense of pride within the community.

THE WOOTTON COMMUNITY CENTRE

The centre consists of the following elements which as a whole provide spaces for dinners, meetings, workshops, and gatherings of the community.

Brush Turkey Cafe

The Brush Turkey Cafe has a commercial kitchen and has the capacity to seat 40 guests. Volunteers constructed it over four years with money provided through a grant and it was opened in 2004.

The Wootton Community Hall

Linked to the Community Hall, we provide a unique venue offering on-site catering for conferences and workshops. The community hall has seating for 50 people offering catering via the Brush Turkey Cafe.

Monthly Dinners & Gatherings

The WCN holds regular community events, including a monthly dinner.

The Wootton Valley News is a community newsletter published every second month by the WCN. This website is also regularly updated by the WCN. A veggie swap generally takes place typically on the second Saturday of each month. A light supper and entertainment often follow this.

PUBLICATIONS

The Wootton Valley News is a free publication that details local events and provides general information of interest to the community.

WEBSITE

This website is managed and updated by the WCN. For any corrections of content, please email the WCN Secretary.

 FUTURE GOALS

  • To become an attractive meeting place for locals, to serve their social needs and thus reducing isolation.
  • To attract people to the area who will share in the future vision of the area.
  • To promote and protect this area's natural beauty through eco-friendly tourism and visitor accommodation.
